I first had an encounter with the Tarot in Los Angeles, while I was either having a reading done, or a friend of mine was. I am pretty sure it was the standard Rider Waite Smith deck that is widely known amongst the community.

I didn’t see another Tarot deck until around 2006; I was half a world away, living in the UAE. I walked into a store that looked interesting, sure enough next to a mini palm reading kit (seriously), there was a Rider Waite Smith Tarot deck. For the next year or so, I used the deck on and off. I read the little white book that came with it to learn the meanings, and study the images to get what I could from them. I didn’t find it difficult to do, it was like reading a picture book, the images told the story.

A couple of years later a girlfriend of mine turned me on to Doreen Virtue (long before her fabulous meltdown), and her various Angel decks. Well, I had long since lost the connection with my Tarot deck, and I bought an Archangel deck and Mermaids and Dolphins deck.

I had used these on and off for years until my interested was piqued yet again, and on another continent! In 2014, I fell right back into the beautiful work of cartomancy. There were so many amazing Tarot (Oracle, Angel card) decks out there, different styles for different tastes. These decks were like mini art collections you could hold in your hands. The amazing esoteric knowledge and symbolism weaved into this artwork made it completely irresistible to me, I was hooked, and for good.

Tarot has gotten a bad rap over the years, associated with tricksters, and frauds, out to get your money with the promise of seeing into your future. The way I see Tarot is, as a spiritual tool. The future is not set in stone, you have choices, and you can change the outcome. It’s nice to have guidance from the heavens or your higher self, in order to make conscious decisions from your unconscious mind. Tarot is like diving into a deep ocean, and unlocking the mysteries below.
